Kai Tak Hospital Begins Phased Operation After Decade of Planning

According to the South China Morning Post, Kai Tak Hospital, which is situated on the former airport grounds in Kai Tak, is initiating its initial phase of operation this Monday, following more than a decade dedicated to planning and preparation.

This hospital, which represents Hong Kong's largest public healthcare facility, has a gross floor area of approximately 500,000 square metres and will feature 2,400 beds. The construction and planning of the hospital involved an expenditure exceeding HK$36 billion, and it is composed of five buildings located on the south apron of the former airport site.

Key features of Kai Tak Hospital include a 24-hour accident and emergency department and 37 operating theatres. Furthermore, the hospital will house Hong Kong's largest pharmacy, which is noted as the first public hospital to implement an automated dispensing system capable of managing up to 3,200 prescriptions daily. The hospital is scheduled to progressively assume services currently provided by Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Jordan.
