Based on reporting by BBC UK:

British adventurer Karl Bushby has concluded his 31,000-mile (50,000 km) trek from South America to Hull in the UK, reuniting with his mother at the family residence 28 years after he commenced his journey.

In November 1998, the former paratrooper, who was 29 at the time, departed from Punta Arenas, Chile, with the goal of completing an uninterrupted path back home while adhering to two self-imposed rules: not returning to the UK until the journey's end, and not using transport to advance.

Prior to reaching his mother, crowds gathered in Hull's city center to greet Bushby as he made the final miles to her home. Upon reaching the front door, Bushby stated that it felt surreal to be home.

Bushby's travels spanned four continents, with notable experiences including traversing the dense jungles of the Darién Gap, crossing the frozen Bering Strait, and more recently, swimming the English Channel. Following his reunion with his mother, he confirmed during a press conference that he was retiring from his endeavors.

As previously arranged, Bushby's mother, Angela, was waiting for him at her residence in Sutton Park, the place where she raised him. Bushby appeared momentarily speechless after the meeting, telling the BBC that the 28-year journey felt surreal.

His mother, who had not seen him for a decade, asked him where he had been, and later told the media that she felt relieved and was pleased to have him home.

Bushby mentioned that he was still processing his return home, describing his head as being in a "one big blurry mess."

When asked about his next steps, he indicated that he had a story to share. He confirmed that he is working on a second book detailing his travels and is also collaborating with German filmmaker Werner Herzog on a documentary.

Bushby admitted he did not anticipate such a homecoming. When addressed by the lord mayor, Maria Coward, in the city center, he expressed that the welcome home was unprecedented and thanked the "Earth" for bringing him back.

On Sunday, as he crossed the Humber Bridge into East Yorkshire, he was met by his 36-year-old son Adam, his 12-year-old granddaughter, whom he had never met, his father, and his brothers. Bushby described that reunion as amazing.

After returning to the UK, Bushby stated that he anticipated facing difficulties in the ensuing days and weeks as he adjusted to a normal life. He noted that his current self and knowledge of himself would change, which he suggested could lead to an identity crisis, given his life as an adventurer for half his life. He referenced an adage, stating that the only thing worse than a man who cannot fulfill his dreams is a man who has fulfilled them, because then what.

Bushby had previously mentioned that he always possessed a "wanderlust," and his opportunity to undertake this journey arose after his marriage ended and his wife returned to Northern Ireland with their son. He noted that only approximately 15 of the 28 years were spent walking, with delays attributed to visa issues, the 2007 global economic crash, and Covid.

Between his various travel segments, Bushby frequently stayed in Mexico due to lower costs. Under the rules he established for his journey, he was unable to return to the UK to see his family. On rare occasions, he met his divorced parents and son in other countries. Bushby initially set off as a backpacker with no money, often relying on handouts or eating discarded food from roadsides. He later managed to secure sponsors, a book deal, and a planned documentary.
