South China Morning Post reports that 25-year-old American violinist Kevin Zhu delivered a captivating performance of Edouard Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole during a concert featuring other works, including Beethoven and Adrian Wong, and showcased his technical skill and musicality.
According to the South China Morning Post, Kevin Zhu, a 25-year-old American violinist, delivered a seductive rendition of Edouard Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole during a concert held on September 26. This performance was part of a program that also included pieces by Beethoven and Adrian Wong, alongside Georges Bizet’s Carmen.
Edouard Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole, a brilliant five-movement fiesta for violin and orchestra, was originally composed for the legendary Spanish violinist, conductor, and composer Pablo de Sarasate, a month before the March 1875 premiere of Bizet’s southern Spain-set opera.
During the Hong Kong Sinfonietta’s concert, Zhu was noted for displaying fearless technique, a polished sound, and inherent musicality, which the publication likened to a bullfighter’s cape. Zhu demonstrated this skill by making sul G playing (high on the G string), as well as significant register jumps and rapid up-bow staccatos, appear effortless.
