Lime Addresses Jousting on E-Bikes in London Fields Amid Safety Concerns
Lime, the e-bike rental company, has issued statements clarifying that its bikes are not intended for jousting, following footage of two individuals dressed as knights performing such an act in London Fields, Hackney. The company also noted an increase in injuries to both e-bike riders and pedestrians.
According to a report from BBC UK, the e-bike rental service Lime stated that its bikes are not designed for jousting, following the circulation of footage from the weekend showing two individuals dressed as knights engaging in a joust in London Fields, Hackney. Hundreds of people gathered in London Fields, Hackney, to observe artist Jack Carden and actor Camtholomew the First performing a joust while utilizing the bright green rentable e-bikes. The social media videos depicted them in full knight attire, including chainmail and lances, as they attempted to unseat each other from the bikes.
A spokesperson for the company commented that while they value the medieval spirit, safety must be the primary concern. On Monday, a Lime spokesperson also stated that the company encourages community building among Londoners but added that Lime bikes are intended for navigating the city, not for jousting. Furthermore, the spokesperson indicated that Lime discourages similar activities to help maintain the safety of both riders and those nearby.
Prior to the event, Carden described the "free public joust" as a form of "performance art" in a social media post. A video of the event posted to his Instagram account had garnered over four million views. Despite the popularity of the demonstration, hospitals have reported a rise in injuries sustained by both e-bike riders and pedestrians.
