According to the South China Morning Post, Los Angeles County prosecutors are requesting a bail of US$100 million for each of a Chinese-born couple who were charged on Tuesday with conspiring to abuse young children who were born through surrogacy and were raised in their California mansion.

Guojun Xuan, aged 66, and Silvia Zhang, aged 39, are alleged to have instructed nannies to physically punish the children at their California residence while monitoring the incidents via a comprehensive surveillance system. Furthermore, the felony complaint states that the couple coached the children prior to the police arrival to deny the alleged abuse.

The district attorney’s office indicated that at least 14 children born through surrogacy, some as young as two months old, were subjected to abuse. The couple is accused of conspiring to subject 15 out of the 16 children residing in the home to repeated physical abuse.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated in a statement that the quantity of children allegedly subjected to this horrific abuse was unprecedented.
