Malta Death Inquest Concludes Accident: Software Engineer May Not Have Known He Was Falling

An inquest at Caernarfon Coroner's Court concluded that the death of 25-year-old software engineer Kieran Hughes in Malta was an accident, with no evidence of third-party involvement. The coroner noted that Hughes may not have been aware he was falling from a balcony, and a post-mortem indicated a substantial level of alcohol in his blood.

According to the BBC UK, the inquest at Caernarfon Coroner's Court determined that the death of Kieran Hughes, a 25-year-old from Nant Gwynant, Gwynedd, who occurred in the early morning hours of July 11, 2025, while on vacation in Malta with three companions, was an accident, finding no evidence of involvement from any third party. Maltese authorities' post-mortem examination revealed a "substantial level" of alcohol in Hughes' blood.

Hughes and his friends traveled to St Julian's in Malta in July 2025 and were staying at the Cavalieri Art Hotel. On July 10, the court was informed that the group departed the hotel around 19:00 BST to attend dinner, a casino, and other locations, consuming beer, cocktails, and limoncello.

At approximately 04:15 on July 11, a member of the public entered the hotel to report a man lying outside. Police were subsequently called and discovered a man who appeared lifeless in a pool of blood. Police proceeded to room 603, located above where Hughes' body was discovered, and attempted to rouse his friend, Osian Jones, who was asleep and appeared intoxicated and smelled of alcohol.

Hughes and Jones were sharing a room, while the other two friends were in a separate room. The inquest heard that Jones did not wake up until about 06:30, but investigations showed no signs of any third-party involvement in Hughes' death. The inquest also noted that there was no disarray in room 603, and CCTV footage showed the pair returning to their room while holding onto each other.

Coroner Elizabeth Dudley-Jones stated that there did not appear to be any animosity between Kieran and Mr. Jones, and there were no reports of shouting or arguments. CCTV captured Hughes' fall approximately 48 minutes after he returned to his room.

An autopsy determined that Hughes died from multiple injuries resulting from blunt force trauma caused by a fall from height. The absence of any apparent resistance injuries suggested it was possible that he was unaware he was falling from the balcony. The inquest heard it was likely that Hughes and his friend had gone to sleep, and Hughes, who was in a state of "severe drunkenness," went outside, possibly because he felt unwell or desired fresh air.

Dudley-Jones informed Hughes' family, who were present at the hearing, that his death was a "complete tragedy" and that he was an "amazing man." She also commented that she had not enjoyed the inquest, stating that this particular one was "very moving." In a statement read to the inquest by the coroner, Hughes' father, Alan, mentioned that his family faced "hurdle after hurdle" when dealing with the Maltese authorities and that they experienced "heartache all day, every day."
