MPs Warn of 'Glaring Gaps' in UK Arctic Defence Against Potential Russian Threats
A report by Members of Parliament has cautioned that the United Kingdom possesses significant deficiencies in its capacity to defend the Arctic region, making it susceptible to potential Russian aggression. The Commons Defence Committee specifically noted that a scarcity of Royal Navy warships and submarines leaves vital infrastructure in the High North exposed.
Based on reporting by BBC UK:
A report released by Members of Parliament has cautioned that the United Kingdom has "glaring gaps" in its capacity to defend the Arctic region, which leaves it vulnerable to potential attacks from Russia. The Commons Defence Committee stated that a shortage of Royal Navy warships and submarines is exposing the country's critical infrastructure in the High North, including energy supplies and undersea cables.
According to the report, in the event of a conflict, Russia could pose a threat to the UK's civilian and military infrastructure, its population, and essential supply routes across the Atlantic originating from the US. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has stated that it is "clear-eyed about the threat Russia posed" and is currently making substantial investments to safeguard Britain's undersea cables.
In recent years, the High North, which encompasses the Arctic circle and adjacent areas, has become a focal point of the UK's defence concerns. Earlier this year, the MoD reported that Russian submarine activity in the North Atlantic has returned to levels comparable to the Cold War era. The new report highlighted a "shockingly low availability" of submarines and noted a temporary reduction in the ability to operate them beneath Arctic ice.
It was added that Russia could utilize the ice to shield and protect its own submarines while simultaneously endangering NATO sea lanes, the UK's critical infrastructure, and the UK's nuclear deterrent. Tan Dhesi, the Chair of the Defence Committee, commented that the environment is "demanding, hostile," and that Russia, which is described as the greatest adversary, is attempting to gain military advantage by dominating it. Dhesi also added that the necessary work to address these deficiencies "cannot start soon enough."
Considering uncertainty regarding US support for NATO, the report suggested that the UK should evaluate whether the British-led Joint Expeditionary Force (Jef), a military coalition of northern European nations led by the UK, ought to concentrate more on the High North. An MoD spokesperson mentioned that the Jef is already working to "strengthen Nato's northern flank and increase our ability to respond rapidly to emerging threats."
Conservative shadow minister for war readiness Stuart Anderson remarked that if NATO were to engage in war with Russia as early as 2030, as a former prime minister had warned, then the element of time is as significant as financial resources. Anderson asserted that to deter war, readiness is necessary, which requires immediate spending rather than delaying action until it is too late.
