Mulbarton Wanderers Win Controversial FA Cup Replay, Draw Record Crowd of 806
Mulbarton Wanderers secured a 2-0 victory in a controversial FA Cup replay, drawing a record crowd of 806 in Norfolk. The win earns them £3,375 from the FA Cup prize fund and a home fixture against Gloucester City in the third qualifying round.
Mulbarton Wanderers thanked supporters after 'the whole village' came out to support them as they won a controversial FA Cup replay, as reported by BBC UK. The initial encounter between Mulbarton Wanderers and Woodford Town garnered international attention because the Football Association (FA) made the unusual determination to order a replay stemming from an error made by a referee.
A record attendance of 806 individuals was present at the match in Norfolk, with Wanderers advancing following a 2-0 triumph. This victory provided Mulbarton with £3,375 from the FA Cup prize fund and secured a home match against Gloucester City in the third qualifying round of the world's oldest football competition.
Danny Self, who serves as the joint first team manager at Mulbarton, stated that the team was extremely pleased to have provided the fans with something to celebrate, noting that the support received was remarkable. Ashley Jarvis, who scored both goals for Mulbarton, commented on the excellent atmosphere, adding that the entire village turned out and they were pleased with the win.
Mulbarton had to introduce advance ticketing because of 'unprecedented demand' due to the tie's media attention.
Tuesday's match occurred after the FA unexpectedly decided that the game should be replayed and relocated to Norfolk. The London-based club, Woodford, which competes in a league below Mulbarton, had lodged an appeal because they believed the laws of the game were applied incorrectly during the initial match, which Wanderers had won 2-1. During the first half of the match, with the score at 0-0, Woodford had a penalty disallowed after their players encroached into the penalty area. However, the game was subsequently restarted by awarding Mulbarton a free-kick instead of allowing Woodford to retake the penalty.
Mulbarton, situated approximately six miles (10km) south of Norwich, has advanced through local leagues in recent years and is participating in the non-league pyramid at step four for the first time this season. Their next opponents, Gloucester, compete at step three of non-league within the Southern League Premier Division South. The winner of the upcoming match will receive £5,625 in winnings, while the loser will receive £1,875.
Despite their loss in Tuesday's tie, Woodford, which is based in London, also received £1,125 from the FA's prize fund.
Victory in the subsequent Saturday's round would position Mulbarton as one win away from a potentially profitable first round proper fixture against EFL teams, including Sheffield Wednesday and Leicester City, the 2021 FA Cup winners.
