Nomination Period Begins for Hong Kong's 1,500-Member Election Committee
The South China Morning Post reports that the two-week nomination period for the 2026 Election Committee Subsector (ECSS) Ordinary Elections commenced on Wednesday, with hopeful candidates from at least four subsectors submitting forms on the first day.
According to the South China Morning Post, the nomination period for elections to the 1,500-member body tasked with selecting Hong Kong's next chief executive and 40 lawmakers opened on Wednesday. This two-week nomination window began on Wednesday for the 2026 Election Committee Subsector (ECSS) Ordinary Elections, which are set for November 22. On the initial day, hopeful candidates from a minimum of four subsectors submitted their nomination forms.
Up to 982 subsector representatives are slated to be elected to the city's primary electoral college. These representatives will be joined by 362 ex officio members and 156 members nominated by designated bodies. Collectively, these 1,500 members will hold the responsibility of nominating and choosing the chief executive in the coming March and electing 40 members of the Legislative Council out of 90 in 2029.
