PanStar Acro Trial Voyage Reduces Suez Canal Route Time, Raises Ice Loss and Sanctions Concerns
According to the South China Morning Post, the PanStar Acro completed a trial voyage along the Arctic shipping route, reducing one-way travel time by 10 days compared to the Suez Canal route, though the route raises concerns regarding ice loss and sanctions.
Based on reporting by South China Morning Post:
The South Korean oceans and fisheries ministry reported that the PanStar Acro concluded its trial voyage on the Arctic shipping route, embarking on a trial voyage on August 22, and docking at Jaseongdae Pier in Busan Port.
President Lee Jae Myung said it shaved 10 days off the one-way sailing time compared to going through the Suez Canal. Officials also indicated that the PanStar Acro managed to complete its round trip to Europe in less time than the conventional route through the Suez Canal.
However, the initiative has prompted apprehension that an increase in traffic along the route might hasten the melting of Arctic ice. Furthermore, because the Arctic route travels near Russia's northern coastline, it could potentially subject operators to risks associated with sanctions.
