According to the South China Morning Post, a traveler was injured after a power bank overheated and began emitting smoke while aboard an HK Express flight traveling from Hong Kong to South Korea on Sunday. This event led to crew members implementing emergency safety procedures before the aircraft made a safe landing.
The incident took place on flight UO676 bound for Jeju, which had 236 passengers and seven crew members on board. HK Express, a subsidiary of Cathay Pacific Airways, issued an apology regarding the occurrence.
The budget airline stated that the power bank, which was kept in a bag beneath a passenger's seat, started to overheat as the flight neared Jeju International Airport. Crew members responded by adhering to standard safety protocols, which involved placing the device into a heat-resistant fire containment bag and subsequently submerging it in water to bring the situation under control.
