Phoebe Waller-Bridge Donates London Flat to Support Emerging Writers
Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge has donated a London flat as part of the Writers' Block initiative to assist early-career writers from underprivileged backgrounds with accommodation costs.
According to BBC UK, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the creator, writer, and actress of Fleabag, is providing a rent-free apartment in London for writers who are at the beginning of their careers. The 41-year-old purchased and donated the flat as part of a new theatre project called Writers' Block, which is designed to address the issue of London housing costs for playwright writers from disadvantaged backgrounds. Waller-Bridge specifically acquired the flat for writers who are just starting out and are finding it difficult to afford housing in the capital, and she has donated its use alongside what the scheme termed a "generous financial contribution." The flat will be provided without rent, with the resident responsible only for paying bills.
Jack Thorne, who co-created Adolescence and has written the films Wonder and Enola Holmes, as well as the stage play Harry Potter And The Cursed Child, is also contributing financial support to the initiative. Thorne stated that he was fortunate when he began his career because his brother lived in Croydon and was able to house him. He added that for many writers, the necessity of having a place to live prevents them from writing, which is why this pilot is considered significant. Thorne noted that if the stories of our complex world are to be told, writers from all backgrounds must be involved. He further commented that for those from privilege, the main challenge is what to write, whereas for those not from privilege, much of the struggle revolves around the need to survive.
Other contributors to the scheme include playwright and screenwriter James Graham, who has written stage productions such as Ink, Quiz, and Dear England, as well as Sally Wainwright, creator of Happy Valley, and Peter Morgan of The Crown. Martin McDonagh, Waller-Bridge's partner, is also involved. McDonagh is recognized for writing and directing films including The Banshees Of Inisherin and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which received Oscar and Bafta awards. Graham commented that the scheme addresses the class barrier facing writers and helps them prevent themselves from completely giving up. He stated that the industry's current push for representation is failing to address the most significant area of under-representation, which is class. Graham shared that when he first arrived in London, he slept on friends' floors and worked in bars and call centers while writing, and that any scheme providing spare rooms to emerging writers in London not only aids their writing but also prevents them from abandoning their efforts entirely.
Writers' Block originated from the Adopt a Playwright Award initiative, which was established in 2008 and offers affordable housing to writers from disadvantaged backgrounds who require presence in the capital for rehearsals, performances, meetings, and career opportunities. Both of these schemes were created by Sofie Mason and Diana Jervis-Read.
