According to the South China Morning Post, Pope Leo asserted that anxieties regarding artificial intelligence having the potential to destroy the world should be treated as genuine concerns and not dismissed as 'fake news,' an apparent response to statements made by US President Donald Trump.

The pontiff, who has voiced warnings about the perils of AI throughout his 16-month papacy, also directed criticism toward technology CEOs who maintained that no restrictions or guardrails should be placed on the technology.

During a press conference while traveling back to Rome following a four-day visit to France, the pontiff stated that he believes the concerns brought forward by numerous experts and specialists in AI merit serious attention, adding that he does not consider those concerns to be fake news, contrary to what some have claimed.

This statement comes after Donald Trump told the UN General Assembly the previous week that he viewed fears concerning AI's potential dangers to humanity as a 'hoax.'
