PostMag Managing Director Eugene Tang Discusses His Collecting Passions
Eugene Tang, the managing director of PostMag, shares insights into his collecting habits, which include junk, contemporary art, celadon ceramics, old stock, and the works of Zhu Da, emphasizing quality over quantity in his pursuits.
According to the South China Morning Post, Eugene Tang, the managing director of PostMag, has shared his experiences regarding collecting. His wife has stated that he collects junk. He also collects contemporary art, although he now acquires less of it in Hong Kong due to limited space. Tang stated that his primary interests are celadon ceramics, old stock and bond certificates (scripophily), and the artwork of Zhu Da, who is also known as Bada Shanren.
Tang explained that his collecting passion is motivated by the search for rarity and the experience of the search itself, noting that he prioritizes quality over quantity. For celadon ceramics, he undertakes thorough research, which involves traveling to historical kiln locations across mainland China to examine shards and the aged clay.
He engages with various individuals within the collecting ecosystem, including buyers, resellers, auctioneers, collectors, gravediggers, and heirloom sellers. Furthermore, Tang visits museums, attends auction previews, and examines notable collections to gain knowledge about authentic pieces before making any purchases.
