Prabowo Appoints 26 Figures to Presidential Advisory Council Amid Approval Rating Concerns
According to the South China Morning Post, Prabowo appointed 26 individuals, including political figures, civil society representatives, Muslim leaders, businessmen, and activists, to a presidential advisory council, a move analysts suggest helps prevent opposition formation.
On Friday, the South China Morning Post reported that Prabowo appointed 26 political figures, civil society representatives, Muslim leaders, businessmen, and activists to the presidential advisory council, which had been vacant since he took office in October 2024. These appointed members include political figures, civil society representatives, Muslim leaders, businessmen, and activists, as specified in the council's composition.
An analyst noted that the council, which offers advice on the direction of government policy but lacks the authority to establish or control it, consists of allies of former presidents, political commentators, and Muslim leaders. Yoes Kenawas, a political analyst from the Indonesian Survey Institute, stated that because these figures have influence, connections, and large followings, keeping them within Prabowo's sphere allows him to feel more secure against opposition being formed externally through these figures.
