President Ali Urges GDF to Remain Apolitical and Loyal to Constitution on 61st Anniversary
President Irfaan Ali addressed the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) on its 61st Anniversary, emphasizing that the military must remain professional, apolitical, and loyal to the Constitution while highlighting government investments in its modernization.
According to Kaieteur News, President Irfaan Ali issued a message on November 4, 2026, reaffirming his administration's dedication to enhancing and modernizing the Guyana Defence Force (GDF). The President charged the military with maintaining professionalism, remaining apolitical, and upholding firm loyalty to the Constitution.
In a message marking the Force's 61st Anniversary, President Ali conveyed congratulations and appreciation to the serving officers, ranks, reservists, civilian staff, and veterans, acknowledging their role in protecting Guyana's sovereignty and serving its populace. The President noted that the GDF was established 61 years ago, preceding Guyana's Independence, with the core duty of defending the nation's territorial integrity and serving its citizens.
Ali stated that for over six decades, the Force has fulfilled this duty with courage, loyalty, and professionalism. He characterized the anniversary as a tribute to the veterans who established the military, patrolled Guyana's extensive borders under difficult circumstances, and defended the nation's sovereignty.
He also recognized the personnel currently serving on the borders, in territorial waters, airspace, and communities, especially during times of need. The President asserted that service is defined by the Guyanese soldier, emphasizing service to the community and the Cooperative Republic of Guyana over self.
Regarding government investment in the military, Ali indicated that deliberate actions over the last five years have aimed to ensure the Force possesses the necessary capabilities and facilities to meet its obligations. These efforts include ongoing recapitalization, expanded and modernized training, infrastructure development, and improvements to soldiers' living conditions.
These investments, the President noted, encompass the procurement of new aircraft and vessels, the construction of contemporary barracks, and the reinforcement of forward operating bases nationwide. Ali stated that this transformation has made the GDF more adaptable, agile, and aware, better preparing it for the complex demands of a changing Guyana. While affirming Guyana's commitment to peace, international law, and peaceful coexistence, Ali declared that the country would remain determined to defend its sovereignty.
He expressed complete trust and confidence in the GDF as it executes this responsibility. The President also acknowledged the sacrifices made by the soldiers' families and paid tribute to those who died in service to the nation. He urged the Force to maintain the highest standards of conduct and adhere to its constitutional duties, stating, “I charge the Force to continue to serve with honour, to remain professional, apolitical and firmly loyal to the Constitution of Guyana.”
Separately, at a church service held on Sunday to commemorate the anniversary, Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier Omar Khan, MSS, addressed the GDF's achievements and the responsibilities associated with entering its 62nd year of service to the people of Guyana. Brigadier Khan honored the pioneers and veterans who founded the Force, acknowledged the sacrifices of military families, and reiterated the GDF's dual mandate of defense and development, stressing that protecting Guyana's sovereignty and contributing to national advancement are central to its purpose.
Concerning future requirements, Brigadier Khan highlighted the necessity of modernization, adaptability, and operational readiness to address emerging threats. He called upon Officers and Ranks to uphold patriotism, integrity, and professionalism, noting that the Force's ability to fulfill its mandate depends on the competence and conduct of its personnel.
Brigadier Khan also conveyed his gratitude to President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali for his confidence, vision, and support in the GDF's recapitalization process. The sermon referenced Isaiah 6:8, “Here am I; send me,” linking the prophet's response to the commitment to serving the country, reminding personnel that military service requires faith, courage, and dedication to duty.
As the GDF enters its 62nd year, Brigadier Khan suggested that its progress will be measured by its capacity to convert the experience and sacrifices of past generations into the ability to meet contemporary and future defense challenges. This necessitates a Force that is professionally developed, operationally prepared, and equipped to defend Guyana’s territorial integrity, safeguard its sovereignty, and fulfill its defense and security mandate for the people of Guyana.
