Prince Harry Expresses Desire to Mend Family Ties and Reconcile with Family
In an interview with GQ, Prince Harry stated his wish to repair his strained relationships with his father and brother, emphasizing the importance of reconciliation amidst global events. The Duke of Sussex also mentioned that being closer to his family in the UK has been significant for his children.
According to a report from BBC UK, the Duke of Sussex shared in a magazine interview that he desires to mend his complicated relationships with his father and brother. Prince Harry told GQ in New York that reconciliation is the most crucial element, especially considering current global matters, stating, "Some people don't want it to work out. I want it to work out. With everything else that's going on in the world, the most important thing is to reconcile - that's the key point."
Prince Harry advised that while past hurts remain, individuals should focus on their perspective and mindset regarding past events, encouraging letting go of the past. A spokesperson for the Sussexes clarified that the reference made to "some people don't want it to work out" was not intended as a slight against his brother Prince William or any other family member.
Prince Harry and Meghan relocated from the UK to the United States in 2020, stepping down from their roles as working royals following what was described as an acrimonious departure. His memoir, Spare, detailed the extent of the family discord and the damaged relationship with his brother William. Despite Prince Harry currently being geographically closer to his family in the UK, the report noted that emotional closeness with his brother Prince William has not appeared to increase, yet in this interview, Harry appeared open to reconciliation.
This message of seeking to build bridges echoed sentiments he had previously conveyed in a BBC interview in May 2025 while residing in the US. Prince Harry acknowledged that the public interest in the royal family's disagreements was "massively relatable," noting that themes of sibling disagreements and broken relationships between parents and children frequently came up in his conversations.
When asked by GQ about his move back to the UK, Prince Harry cited opportunities for the family and the ability to enroll his children in a British school as significant factors, stating that he did not fully realize how important this was to him. He mentioned that his children, Archie and Lilibet, were enjoying the experience, which offered them a different experience. He expressed a desire to be back on UK soil for extended periods, rather than just brief visits.
Prince Harry also offered commentary on the King's health following his cancer treatment, noting that he is improving. Furthermore, he reflected on the grief associated with the passing of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997, stating that he appreciates being able to carry the memory of his mother through his work rather than allowing it to cause him to dwell in grief. He explicitly stated that he does not seek public sympathy, asserting that he has utilized his support network and undergone various forms of therapy to work through his experiences.
