Research Suggestion: DeepSeek's Cost-Saving AI Could Cause Model Inaccuracy
An unreviewed study suggests that DeepSeek's memory-saving technology, which aids its low-cost approach to competing with US AI firms, might compromise model reliability by causing it to miss information based on its placement in a document.
According to research published in the South China Morning Post, a potential weakness has been identified in the memory-saving technology utilized by DeepSeek's models. This technology is part of a low-cost strategy that has assisted the Chinese artificial intelligence laboratory in narrowing the gap with competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic in the United States.
The study, which has not undergone peer review, indicates that DeepSeek's attempts to decrease the memory required for processing extensive inputs might result in diminished dependability. Specifically, the models demonstrated an increased propensity to overlook information when that information was situated in particular locations within a document.
One illustration provided in the research showed that when irrelevant text was placed preceding the identical segment of computer code, DeepSeek's capacity to select the appropriate response was impaired. The paper stated that this phenomenon was observed across DeepSeek-V4, V4.1, and all compressed models that the researchers pre-trained.
