Residents Affected by Tai Po Fire Begin Choosing Replacement Homes Under Government Scheme
Following the Tai Po fire in November, authorities initiated a HK$7.8 billion plan to buy back flats at the eight-block subsidized housing estate, allowing residents to choose replacement housing options.
Based on reporting by South China Morning Post:
Residents who lost their residences in the fatal Tai Po fire began selecting their replacement flats on Tuesday. Some of these residents have requested that authorities implement stamp duty waivers to alleviate financial strain.
In response to the blaze that occurred at Wang Fuk Court last November, the authorities introduced a plan valued at HK$7.8 billion (US$994 million) to repurchase flats within the eight-block subsidized housing estate.
Under the terms of this scheme, individuals participating can utilize the cash compensation to purchase a flat on the private open market or participate in a special sales exercise to acquire new subsidized housing through the government’s “flat-for-flat” arrangement.
Furthermore, a specific arrangement grants priority selection to the initial 35 households that submitted their letters of acceptance by June 30, granting them the opportunity to choose from 4,400 flats across 10 subsidized housing estates.
