A runner passed away after participating in the Cardiff Half Marathon, according to the BBC UK. The event, which is Wales' largest mass participation and fundraising event, has seen previous fatalities, including two in 2019 and one in 2024.
A participant in the Cardiff Half Marathon died, according to statements from event organizers Run4Wales, as reported by the BBC UK. Run4Wales issued a statement on Monday acknowledging the participant's death and expressing gratitude to the event and hospital medical teams for their swift and professional response. The organization conveyed its deepest sympathies to the runner's family and friends, stating that no further information would be shared out of respect for the family's wishes.
The race on Sunday was the 23rd iteration of the 13.1 mile (21km) course, which saw approximately 30,000 individuals participate.
Previous instances of fatalities have been reported at the event. In 2024, a 37-year-old named Stephen Jenkins died in a hospital following a collapse at the finish line. Furthermore, in 2019, both Ben McDonald, who was 25, and Dean Fletcher, who was 32, experienced cardiac arrest after crossing the finish line within minutes of each other.
Cardiff Half Marathon functions as Wales' largest event for mass participation and fundraising, generating over £4m annually for charitable causes. It is noted as the second-largest half marathon in the UK and is part of the SuperHalfs, an international collection of highly regarded half marathons that includes events in Lisbon, Prague, Berlin, Copenhagen, and Valencia. Additionally, the race has received an Elite Race Label from World Athletics.
