Russell Brand Denies Allegations of Sexual Assault, Citing Promiscuity and Fictitious Documentary
During court proceedings, Russell Brand, 51, stated to police that while he has led a very promiscuous life, he has never participated in non-consensual sexual activity, as reported by BBC UK. The court also heard that the judge found insufficient evidence for a charge of indecent assault.
According to BBC UK, Russell Brand, 51, told police during interviews concerning allegations of sexual assault and rape that he has never been involved in non-consensual sexual activity, although he has described his past as being "very promiscuous."
Brand was interviewed four times by officers between 2023 and 2025. The TV and media personality is currently facing trial at Southwark Crown Court in London on three counts of rape and other offenses, and he maintains his innocence regarding all charges.
On Tuesday, the jury heard a prepared statement from Brand in each of the police interviews. In November 2023, he asserted that he has consistently stated publicly and in writing that he has lived a very promiscuous life and has never engaged in non-consensual activity.
Brand further claimed that the allegations originated from "a defamatory and fictitious documentary," which he alleged contained interviews that were "false and anonymised."
He also stated that both the media and the police subsequently encouraged the submission of additional allegations, which he suggested led to further encounters being invented or reimagined.
In court on Tuesday, the jury was formally asked to determine Brand's not guilt regarding a charge of indecent assault. Mr Justice Bennathan stated that there was not enough evidence to support the charge of indecent assault. This specific charge related to an incident in 2001 where a woman alleged that Brand grabbed her arm and attempted to pull her into a toilet while she was employed at MTV.
The jury was subsequently presented with an amended indictment, which charges Brand with attempted indecent assault, to which Brand has pleaded not guilty. The prosecution is scheduled to conclude on Wednesday morning, prior to the defense beginning.
