Section of Brighton's West Pier Collapses into Sea During Storm Austen
A portion of Brighton's historic West Pier fell into the sea during the stormy conditions associated with Storm Austen, according to footage obtained by the BBC UK.
According to the BBC UK, a part of Brighton's historic West Pier collapsed into the ocean amid the wet and windy weather caused by Storm Austen. Footage obtained by the BBC shows one side of the well-known structure in the East Sussex city sinking into the water while being struck by large waves.
The pier, which originally opened in 1866, once drew two million visitors at its height, although its appeal diminished following World War Two. Although it ceased public access in 1975, some consider the increasingly dilapidated structure to be a symbol of Brighton.
Major sections of the pier fell into the sea during storms in late 2002, and two distinct fires the subsequent year destroyed most of what was left. Further storms have since caused additional destruction to its iron frame.
