South Korean football captain Lee Gi-hyuk faced criticism following his comment about not joining the military after his team secured a fourth consecutive Asian Games gold medal.
According to the South China Morning Post, South Korean football captain Lee Gi-hyuk has drawn criticism for his remarks regarding the exemption during his team's victory in the Asian Games. These comments surfaced amid a controversy concerning statements made by members of South Korea's men's football squad, who recently achieved their fourth consecutive Asian Games title, pertaining to the military benefits they received.
South Korea defeated Japan 1-0 in the men's final held in Toyota, near Nagoya, on Saturday. Afterwards, the team's captain, Lee Gi-hyuk, smiled as he held up his gold medal to reporters and said: “I’m not going to the military.” Following the match, the team's captain, Lee Gi-hyuk, displayed a smile while presenting his gold medal to reporters, stating that he would not be going to the military.
It is noted that able-bodied South Korean males are generally mandated to complete between 18 months and two years of military service prior to reaching the age of 28.
