Taiwanese Leader Welcomes US-China Talks While Beijing Accuses Him of Stirring Conflict
Taiwanese leader William Lai Ching-te expressed support for discussions between Washington and Beijing intended to lower the chance of conflict, though Beijing countered by accusing him of inciting confrontation across the Taiwan Strait.
According to the South China Morning Post, Taiwanese leader William Lai Ching-te has expressed welcome for discussions occurring between Washington and Beijing that are intended to decrease the potential for conflict.
Lai's annual address on the Double Tenth, which commemorates the establishment of the Republic of China, Taiwan's official designation, also called for democracies to collaborate in protecting regional tranquility and for the Taiwanese populace's right to exist to be honored.
However, Beijing stated that Lai had demonstrated his genuine intentions and accused him of 'stirring up confrontation across the Taiwan Strait.'
Zhang Han, a spokesperson for the mainland's Taiwan Affairs Office, asserted that Lai Ching-te's speech ignored facts, misled the public, and exposed sinister motives, characterizing it as a performance consistent with a 'pragmatic worker for Taiwan independence,' a label Lai had previously applied to himself.
