The Weeknd's 'Hong Kong' Samples Faye Wong's 'Seasonal Wind,' Written by 'The Prodigal Lyricist'
South China Morning Post reports that The Weeknd's new song 'Hong Kong' incorporates a sample from Faye Wong's 'Seasonal Wind,' which was penned by 'The Prodigal Lyricist.' The original song appeared on Wong's 1993 album 'No Regrets' and is an adaptation of a piece by Yang Li-te and Chen Hsiao-hsia.
According to the South China Morning Post, The Weeknd's recent song 'Hong Kong' features a sample of Faye Wong's 'Seasonal Wind,' a track that was written by 'The Prodigal Lyricist.' The song heavily utilized the original Cantonese vocals from the pop diva Faye Wong in 'Seasonal Wind' (also referred to as 'Monsoon'), integrating her melody with The Weeknd's characteristic R&B style. This unexpected appearance garnered significant attention on social media.
'Seasonal Wind' was released in February 1993 and served as the fourth track on Faye Wong's fifth studio album, 'No Regrets.' This album is noted for being one of her most iconic releases, having surpassed triple platinum status in sales.
The song itself is an adaptation of 'One Day I Will,' which was composed by the Taiwanese songwriting duo Yang Li-te and Chen Hsiao-hsia. Yang Li-te and Chen Hsiao-hsia are recognized for their depictions of urban romance and melancholy, and 'One Day I Will' (1990) is considered one of their most representative works as a duo, alongside Karen Mok Man-wai's 1997 ballad 'He Doesn’t Love Me,' and was covered by Singaporean songstress Joi Chua in 2005.
