Timothy Chan Chi-fung's Journey and Founding of Youth Cancer Hong Kong
Timothy Chan Chi-fung, who was 19 when diagnosed with a mixed germ cell tumour of the testis in 2019, founded Youth Cancer Hong Kong after finding the existing Hong Kong hospital system ill-suited for his age group. His efforts have led to him being named a finalist in the community category of the Spirit of Hong Kong Awards.
According to the South China Morning Post, Timothy Chan Chi-fung was 19 when he was admitted to the Hong Kong hospital system due to a testicular tumour, a system that was largely structured for either children or much older adults. The publication noted that neither of the available doors seemed to fit his situation.
Chan was diagnosed with a mixed germ cell tumour of the testis in 2019. Following his diagnosis, he underwent surgery within two weeks, which was followed by two cycles of chemotherapy. During this time, he experienced hair loss and his university studies were interrupted, though he ultimately recovered.
His personal experience motivated him to establish Youth Cancer Hong Kong, an initiative intended to allow younger patients to openly discuss their experiences with others who understand what a diagnosis and treatment entail at their age. This contribution has resulted in him being recognized as a finalist in the community category of the Spirit of Hong Kong Awards. These awards, which were launched in 2013 to acknowledge individuals and organizations contributing to Hong Kong and its communities, are co-organized by Sino Group and the South China Morning Post.
