US Army Cleric Objects to Live Stream of Nidal Hasan Execution
A prominent US archbishop has voiced strong objections to the Pentagon's plan to broadcast the execution of Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood shooter, scheduled for December 3, stating that Catholic soldiers should not participate in the firing squad.
According to the South China Morning Post, Army cleric Timothy Broglio has expressed opposition to the Pentagon's intention to live stream the execution of Nidal Hasan, who was responsible for the 2009 shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, which resulted in 13 deaths, on December 3.
Archbishop Timothy Broglio, who is responsible for the spiritual care of Catholic members of the US armed forces, issued a statement that was described as unusually forceful, raising several concerns regarding the unprecedented plan to broadcast the execution of Hasan.
Broglio mentioned that he had attended the funeral of one of the victims of the shooting and expressed sorrow over the incident. However, the archbishop questioned whether the United States intended to emulate global terrorists by staging a public display of what he termed the barbaric killing of adversaries.
Broglio stated that he would instruct any Catholics assigned to the firing squad to request exemption from the action, citing the teachings of the church.
