US-China tariff lists each valued at US$30bn, but count different units
The US list covers 77 categories of imports from China, while China’s list covers 1,619 imports from the US. The figures are not like-for-like counts. The tariff measures were accompanied by an agricultural working group agreement, while official statements showed no progress on rare earths.
The South China Morning Post reported that the White House’s recommended tariff reductions covered lists valued at US$30 billion on each side. But the counts describe different units: 77 categories of US imports from China and 1,619 Chinese imports from the US. The equal stated values therefore do not mean the lists contain comparable numbers of entries, and the recommendations do not establish that the tariff reductions were implemented.
China’s Ministry of Commerce said more than 90 per cent of products covered under the agreement would receive most-favoured-nation tariff rates, with all reciprocal tariffs waived. That stated tariff treatment is distinct from the separate agreement to set up an agricultural trade working group. The South China Morning Post reported that progress on rare earths remained absent from official statements.
