The Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, recently announced significant security protocols aimed at ensuring that Venezuelan migrants entering Guyana are thoroughly vetted and documented. He expressed a sense of compassion for the migrants while affirming the commitment to maintaining safe borders.
Brigadier Khan, speaking on the inaugural episode of the programme “Safeguarding the Nation” aired on Facebook, highlighted the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Venezuela that drives people to seek refuge in Guyana. He remarked on the emotional toll witnessed firsthand during visits to border communities, describing the distress and loss of dignity faced by families fleeing their home country.
The process of handling these migrants involves a collaborative approach, incorporating efforts from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) along with various agencies. Brigadier Khan emphasized the GDF’s role in not only border security but also in humanitarian efforts. He noted the military’s extensive involvement in over 200 humanitarian projects aimed at assisting both local and regional partners.
