The newly appointed chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Prime Minister Andrew Holness of Jamaica, emphasizes the importance of reinforcing both regional institutions and global partnerships for the Caribbean to thrive in a changing world. During his speech at the 49th Regular meeting of CARICOM’s Heads of Government in Montego Bay, he underscored that the region must take charge of its own future and strategically enhance its institutional framework.
Holness highlighted human development as the core of the Caribbean’s integration efforts, advocating for priorities like food security, decent work, climate protection, and opportunities for the youth who represent a significant portion of the population. He stressed the necessity of building strong partnerships, stating that progress is driven by trust among nations and that enhanced ties within CARICOM and with key global partners across various continents are crucial.
He pointed out the untapped potential for trade cooperation, particularly with Africa, and called for a collaborative approach within CARICOM, leveraging resources from member states like Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad, and Jamaica. Holness affirmed that the current moment is pivotal for achieving inclusive, resilient, and sustainable prosperity for the Caribbean, underpinning the need for policies aligned with these goals as he pledges to push forward initiatives that solidify the pillars of people, partnership, and prosperity in the region.
