In light of the public’s scrutiny regarding the government’s vision for the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo), President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali emphasized that advancing technology and pursuing diversification are aligned goals, vital to national development.
President Ali reaffirmed that modernizing the sugar industry through mechanization is crucial for lowering costs and enhancing revenue. In response to criticisms from Chartered Accountant Christopher Ram, he clarified that both technological advancement and crop diversification are essential for GuySuCo’s recovery amidst labor shortages.
Highlighting the importance of integrated farming practices and energy-efficient upgrades, the President asserted that modernization will not reduce labor demand but rather enhance worker opportunities. He envisions GuySuCo transitioning into a rural development hub, broadening its production to include crops like rice and cassava.
Modernization encompasses not only improved equipment but also innovative ideas, according to the President. The government plans to upskill workers and encourage them to engage as stakeholders within the mechanization process, fostering a sense of ownership and motivation. Addressing critiques of the government’s plan as reactive, President Ali defended the administration’s strategic approach based on real-people needs, contrasting with the previous administration’s neglect of the sugar sector.
Through continued investments and a clear vision for revitalization, President Ali aims to establish a sustainable future for GuySuCo and its workforce.
