
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently met with Tonga’s Crown Prince and Foreign Affairs Minister, Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala, in Xiamen City on May 28, 2025. The meeting took place during the third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, where Wang extended greetings from Chinese President Xi Jinping to Tonga’s King Tupou VI.
Wang emphasized the robust 27-year diplomatic relationship between China and Tonga, highlighting their solidarity in facing challenges such as natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic. He affirmed China’s unwavering support for Tonga’s sovereignty and development, appreciating Tonga’s commitment to the one-China principle and their collaborative efforts across various sectors.
Noting the substantial growth of bilateral cooperation since the establishment of diplomatic ties, Wang attributed much of this progress to the Belt and Road Initiative. He reiterated China’s role as a reliable long-term partner, encouraging Tonga’s active participation in international affairs and its support for China’s multilateral positions.
In response, the Crown Prince conveyed his gratitude for China’s assistance during critical events like the volcanic eruption and pandemic, acknowledging the positive impact on Tongan livelihoods. He proposed increased collaboration in education, medical services, and climate change initiatives, expressing confidence in the fruitful outcomes of the foreign ministers’ meeting.
