In a dramatic encounter, Florida surfer Matthew Bender is recuperating after a shark bit him while he surfed at New Smyrna Beach, known as the world’s shark bite capital. The incident occurred on Sunday, July 6, when a shark clamped onto Bender’s arm, an experience he described as feeling like a “bear trap.” In a hospital interview, he recounted, “It felt like electricity—pressure, extreme pressure.” Despite the attack leaving a significant bite mark measuring approximately 10 inches, Bender remarkably remained conscious and composed.
Quick-thinking bystanders assisted him by creating a makeshift tourniquet from his board leash, which helped control the bleeding until lifeguards arrived. After an emergency surgery to repair the damage, including severed muscles and nerves, Bender expressed his relief at still having mobility in his hand, calling it a “miracle.”
Although the road to recovery may be challenging and will leave lasting scars, Bender is optimistic about getting back in the water. He maintains a positive attitude, stating, “I’ll be back out there. I’m a New Smyrna surfer at heart, and it’s not going to end now just because of this.” Authorities have yet to disclose details on the shark involved in the incident, but Bender feels grateful for his survival.”}
