President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa has placed Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on immediate leave following allegations linking him to organized crime. In a nationally televised address, Ramaphosa announced the establishment of a judicial commission to investigate these serious claims, which he stated could compromise the nation’s constitution and security.
Ramaphosa appointed law professor Firoz Cachalia as the interim police minister during this investigative process. Mchunu has refuted the allegations, maintaining his readiness to address the accusations against him, which involve interference in probes related to political murders and corruption within the law enforcement sector.
The president emphasized the necessity for a thorough investigation, which will extend to both current and former police officials and members of the national executive. The mounting public demand for decisive action has pressured Ramaphosa, as Mchunu is a prominent figure within the African National Congress (ANC) and is rumored to be considering a leadership bid in the party’s 2027 conference.
The claims surfaced when KwaZulu-Natal provincial police chief Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi alleged Mchunu received financial backing from a potentially corrupt businessman to support his political activities. Mkhwanazi also raised concerns regarding the disbandment of a task force investigating high-profile political killings, asserting it was influenced by vested interests.
