Swedish authorities have formally charged Osama Krayem, a 32-year-old convicted terrorist, in connection with the 2015 murder of Jordanian pilot Moaz al-Kasasbeh, who was brutally burned alive in Syria by the Islamic State (IS) group.
Krayem, a Swedish national currently incarcerated for his involvement in the Paris and Brussels terror attacks in 2015 and 2016, faces charges of war crimes and terrorism. His trial is set to commence on June 4, following his previous claims of innocence regarding similar allegations. The Swedish Prosecution Authority recently announced that Krayem was part of a group that executed al-Kasasbeh, who was captured when his aircraft was downed near Raqqa during an anti-IS mission in December 2014.
Details revealed by prosecutors indicate that Krayem, armed and masked, helped confine the pilot in a metal cage, which was later set ablaze by another accomplice, leading to the pilot’s death. This incident occurred amidst Jordan’s efforts to negotiate his release as part of a prisoner swap.
Krayem originally hails from Malmö, Sweden, and is believed to have traveled to Syria to join IS in September 2014. He previously received a 30-year sentence for his involvement in the Paris attacks that resulted in 130 fatalities, as well as for the Brussels attacks that claimed 32 lives.
