A New Jersey lifeguard, Alex Kaus, who faced a life-threatening accident involving a beach umbrella, has returned to work three weeks post-incident. At just 18 years old, Kaus was on duty at Asbury Park’s 3rd Avenue Beach when a sudden gust of wind caused her to fall onto the sharp end of a 1-inch metal pole. Fellow lifeguards found her with the stake impaled through her shoulder, prompting immediate medical assistance.
Despite the harrowing experience, Kaus shared her optimism, stating, “Physically, I’m pretty good.” Currently preparing for her return to the University of Wisconsin at Madison, she has resumed work by checking for beach badges, while awaiting medical clearance to fully return to guarding beachgoers.
Reflecting on her journey, Kaus, who has been a lifeguard for two summers, expressed gratitude towards her coworkers who aided her during the accident. While the incident drew national attention, she remains focused on her recovery and the crucial role of lifeguards. “We appreciate it when people recognize the work we do to keep everyone safe,” she added. Kaus hopes that her story will highlight the dedication lifeguards show along coastlines everywhere.
