In a recent address to the residents of Region Nine, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali highlighted the importance of technical and vocational education as a means to foster sustainable careers and success in a dynamic economy. This message was delivered during the inauguration of the $356.5 million Practical Instruction Centre (PIC) at St. Ignatius Secondary School.
President Ali emphasized that technical education should not be seen as inferior; rather, it provides a practical framework aligning with the country’s and the world’s needs. He strongly advocated for embracing this educational path, noting its crucial role in innovation and entrepreneurship.
The PIC in Region Nine is part of a larger initiative, with six new Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centres set to be established across Guyana, greatly increasing access to hands-on training opportunities.
President Ali recognized the contributions of the Amerindian community to national development, citing their impressive representation in nursing and the Joint Services as examples of success stemming from increased opportunities.
Additionally, a new policy from the Ministry of Education aims to create a unified national TVET institution, streamlining the management of practical instruction centres. A budget allocation of $2.6 billion for 2025 signifies the government’s commitment to advancing TVET programs throughout the nation.
