Georgetown’s Tiger Bay is set to become the country’s first ‘model neighbourhood’ as part of a large-scale urban renewal project. President Dr. Irfaan Ali has outlined plans for a pilot programme that prioritises community love, security, and social welfare.
The initiative aims to transform the area into a safe and thriving community, with improved public spaces, strengthened security, and a focus on resident involvement.
A committee led by Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Priya Manickchand has been established to engage residents and oversee works in Tiger Bay. The plan also includes 15 landmark demonstration projects that will focus on ‘green’ infrastructure, climate resilience, and cultural heritage celebration.
The goal is to foster neighbourhood unity and sustainability, with initiatives such as monetising family lands, improving housing, developing community facilities, and integrating social services for women and children.
President Ali has committed to removing the societal stigma surrounding Tiger Bay, instead promoting a ‘neighbourhood of love’ where residents work together to create a positive environment.
