A devastating bomb blast has struck a crowded mosque in Nigeria’s Borno state, leaving at least five people dead and 35 injured.
The explosion occurred during evening prayers in the Gamboru market of Maiduguri, the state capital. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with people standing in a market area amidst dust particles in the air.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but militants have previously targeted mosques and crowded places in the region with suicide attacks and improvised explosive devices (IED).
Borno state has been the epicenter of an insurgency by the militant Islamist group Boko Haram and its offshoot Islamic State West Africa Province since 2009.
Security measures against the group have failed to prevent sporadic attacks against civilians in north-east Nigeria, highlighting the need for a sustained effort to combat the insurgency.
