A devastating incident of domestic violence has shaken the quiet town of Baramita, North West District. Nineteen-year-old Nadria James is currently in police custody, accused of murdering her partner, 20-year-old Kevin Smith.
The alleged attack occurred on Thursday at around 5:00 pm when James returned home from drinking alcohol to find Smith lying in his hammock. According to eyewitnesses, James became agitated after being stabbed by Smith with a cutlass and subsequently retaliated with a handmade knife.
Smith suffered severe injuries and was found unresponsive on the ground. He was pronounced dead at the Baramita Cottage Hospital.
The incident highlights the alarming rise in domestic violence cases in Guyana, with many victims too afraid to speak out against their abusers.
