As of now, 270 bodies have been retrieved from the site of the devastating plane crash in Ahmedabad, which occurred on Thursday. A Boeing Dreamliner 787-8, bound for London, tragically crashed into a residential area shortly after takeoff, resulting in the loss of nearly all its 242 passengers and crew, with only one survivor, a 40-year-old British man.
Authorities are working to confirm the number of fatalities among those on the ground, employing DNA testing for identification. Vigils honoring the victims have been conducted across India and the UK, reflecting the widespread impact of this tragedy.
The investigation into the crash is being led by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), with assistance from US and UK teams. A crucial piece of evidence, a black box, was recovered from the crash site, which aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu stated would be instrumental in determining the crash’s cause.
Just under a minute after departing from Ahmedabad’s airport, the aircraft experienced a fatal decline and crashed into a building at BJ Medical College and Civil Hospital. The Junior Doctors’ Association confirmed that 270 bodies have been received, with 241 believed to be passengers and crew from Flight AI171.
In response to the incident, India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has mandated heightened safety checks for the airline’s Boeing 787 fleet. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Air India CEO Campbell Wilson have paid their respects at the crash site, emphasizing the national mourning and support for the affected families.
