Officials in Regional Division Three are probing the case of Omar Nazareth Martinez Rodriguez, a 30-year-old Venezuelan construction worker fatally attacked in Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara.
The episode unfolded on the evening of June 14, around 7:40 PM, near the Panda Supermarket along Goed Fortuin Public Road. Reports indicate that Rodriguez was assaulted and stabbed by three male assailants, suspected to also hail from Venezuela.
Initial findings show that the victim was returning home in a taxi when suspects on a motorcycle intercepted the vehicle close to the Demerara Harbour Bridge roundabout. Two suspects reportedly forced their way into the car, launching an assault on Rodriguez.
The taxi driver managed to escape with Rodriguez while one attacker remained inside. He eventually stopped at Goed Fortuin, where he expelled the remaining suspect and kept Rodriguez secured in the vehicle for safety.
After entering the nearby supermarket, the driver noticed Rodriguez fleeing towards him, pursued by three men. A security guard at the store corroborated that Rodriguez was chased and brutally attacked by the assailants, one of whom was armed with a knife.
Rodriguez sustained severe stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. His body is at Ezekiel Funeral Home pending a post-mortem. Thanks to prompt police response, two suspects were apprehended in La Grange and are currently assisting with the investigation. Authorities urge anyone with further information to come forward.
