The U.S. Coast Guard has announced that the captain of the tugboat involved in a tragic collision on Monday, which resulted in the deaths of two young girls at a sailing camp, underwent an alcohol test as part of their investigation.
One of the victims has been identified as 7-year-old Mila Yankelevich, who was the granddaughter of noted Argentinian television producer Cris Morena. The Argentine Consulate in Miami has confirmed her identity and expressed their willingness to assist her family during this difficult time.
Alongside Mila, a 13-year-old girl, whose name has not yet been revealed, also lost her life after being transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Officials reported that an 8-year-old and an 11-year-old girl remain in critical condition, while others involved include a 12-year-old girl, a 19-year-old, and a camp counselor.
Coast Guard Capt. Frank Florio stated that standard procedure involves testing the alcohol levels of boat operators after such incidents. He pledged commitment to uncovering the circumstances of the accident, which occurred when the barge hit the sailboat around 11:30 a.m. A witness recounted the chaos, describing the drastic impact on the sailboat.
The investigation will also assess the licensing of the tug and barge crew and will look into the Miami Yacht Club, where the sailing activity commenced.
Families affected by this incident are in mourning as authorities work diligently to provide them with answers.
