A farmworker sadly lost his life following injuries sustained during a recent immigration enforcement operation at a cannabis farm in California, as reported by union officials. The United Farm Workers stated, “We tragically can confirm that a farmworker has died of injuries they sustained as a result of yesterday’s immigration enforcement action.”
On Thursday, a confrontation erupted between protesters and federal agents at Glass House Farms in Camarillo, where immigration raids were taking place. In a bid to disperse demonstrators, authorities resorted to using tear gas, as captured in videos of the incident.
Rodney Scott, Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), revealed that they discovered ten minors, the majority being unaccompanied, at the Camarillo location, leading to an investigation into child labor practices at the farm.
These raids, conducted under the guidance of the Trump administration, have faced backlash from local and state officials, particularly targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal records. The union criticized these operations, highlighting the injuries to workers during what they termed “chaotic raids,” and emphasized that many, including U.S. citizens, are still unaccounted for.
The union articulated the ongoing distress caused by these federal operations, insisting that such actions endanger lives and wreak havoc on agricultural communities, voicing a strong call for an immediate cessation of these raids.
