On Saturday afternoon, Feroze Bhagwandin, a remand prisoner charged with murder, was discovered unresponsive and hanging in the washroom of Lusignan Prison, according to a report from the Guyana Prison Service.
Despite immediate efforts from prison officers who raised the alarm and provided assistance, Bhagwandin was pronounced dead later at the Georgetown Public Hospital. An investigation has been initiated by both police and prison officials, with plans for a post-mortem examination next week to determine the cause of death.
The Officer-in-Charge of Lusignan Prison mentioned that there had been no previous indications of welfare concerns regarding Bhagwandin and assured that support services will be extended to his family during this difficult time.
This incident raises important questions about inmate welfare and the protocols in place within correctional facilities.
