(BBC) A physician and his family are among the casualties of a devastating Air India flight accident.
On Thursday, a Boeing 787 heading for Gatwick tragically went down shortly after departing from Ahmedabad, claiming the lives of over 240 people. Among the deceased was Dr. Prateek Joshi, a radiologist at Royal Derby Hospital, alongside his wife and three children, according to the Derby Hindu Temple in Pear Tree.
A spokesperson from the temple expressed their sorrow on social media, asking for strength to support the grieving family through this profound heartbreak.
The ill-fated flight carried 242 individuals, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese citizens, and one Canadian.
Former neighbor Neil Ryan shared his devastation at the loss, recalling the Joshi family as “the nicest family” he had known. Dr. Joshi’s colleague, Mario Dimitrio Donadio, described him as a talented and joyful professional, who recently expressed excitement about reuniting his family in the UK.
University Hospitals of Derby and Burton (UHDB) NHS Foundation Trust lamented the loss of Dr. Joshi, noting he was a beloved member of their team. Chief executive Stephen Posey praised him as an excellent doctor and a genuinely kind person.
Flight AI171 faced difficulties moments after takeoff, issuing a mayday call before losing contact. It crashed into a residential neighborhood known as Meghani Nagar.
A spokesperson for the Derby Hindu Temple conveyed their heartfelt condolences and offered prayers for the Joshi family during this irreplaceable loss.
