In a heartbreaking report from the East Darfur state of Sudan, thirteen children lost their lives last month primarily due to critical food shortages at a displacement camp known as Lagawa. This devastation has been highlighted by the Sudan Doctors Network, an organization with members actively working in the camp, who noted alarming levels of widespread malnutrition linked to the ongoing civil war that has now persisted for 27 months.
Situated in the city of el-Daein, Lagawa camp houses approximately 7,000 individuals, many of whom have faced repeated assaults from armed groups. The dire humanitarian conditions have led to the declaration of famine in various regions of Darfur, marking a significant worsening of the crisis.
The Sudan Doctors Network has urgently appealed to the international community and humanitarian organizations for immediate assistance in providing adequate food and basic healthcare services to residents, particularly vulnerable groups such as children and pregnant women.
El-Daein, which is under the control of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) amidst a power struggle against the army, is witnessing a complete collapse of humanitarian aid, economic stability, and social services. Moreover, aid organizations have raised alarms about a cholera outbreak exacerbated by deteriorating sanitation conditions.
This civil war, ignited in April 2023, has resulted in one of the gravest humanitarian crises globally, with tens of thousands of civilians deceased and over 12 million displaced. The situation continues to demand urgent global attention.
