
In a devastating incident, at least 19 individuals have lost their lives, and 164 more have been injured after a Bangladeshi air force training jet crashed into a school in Dhaka. The crash occurred at Milestone School and College in Uttara, where footage captured horrifying scenes of fire and smoke engulfing the two-story building following the aircraft’s impact.
The air force confirmed that the F-7 jet encountered a mechanical failure shortly after takeoff for a training mission at approximately 1:00 PM local time. Among the deceased was the pilot, identified as Flight Lieutenant Md. Taukir Islam.
Reports from a doctor at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery indicate that over 50 casualties, including both students and guardians, were hospitalized with burn injuries. Students ranging in age from four to eighteen were present during the incident.
Eyewitness accounts from teachers and students recount the harrowing moment of the crash, with one teacher stating they saw the plane collide with the building. In an effort to avoid causing further casualties, the pilot attempted to steer the jet towards a less crowded area before the crash.
Emergency services are working tirelessly to rescue individuals from the wreckage, and an official investigation has commenced. Following this tragedy, Bangladesh’s interim government leader, Muhammad Yunus, expressed deep sorrow and pledged to investigate the tragedy thoroughly.
In light of the accident, the nation will observe a day of mourning, with flags flown at half-mast as a mark of respect.
