
A devastating train derailment in south-west Germany has resulted in the deaths of at least three individuals and left several others critically injured, according to police reports. The incident occurred near Riedlingen, close to Stuttgart, with operator Deutsche Bahn stating that the crash was due to “unknown reasons.” Local weather conditions suggested a storm had passed through the area shortly before the derailment.
Approximately 100 passengers were onboard when two carriages went off the tracks in a forested region at around 18:10 local time. Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his sorrow over the tragedy, extending condolences to the victims’ families and committing to support emergency services during this crisis.
Ulm police confirmed that initial investigations have verified the fatalities, alongside numerous serious injuries among passengers. Photos from the scene depict overturned carriages and a significant emergency response, as rescue teams worked to reach those trapped, amidst fallen trees and debris.
Deutsche Bahn indicated that the train was en route on a 90 km stretch from Sigmaringen to Ulm at the time of the accident.
