On Friday, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali introduced a series of groundbreaking initiatives aimed at revolutionizing the agricultural landscape in Region Five during a gathering with local farmers at the Mahaica Mahaicony Abary Agricultural Development Authority (MMA-ADA) compound.
Hundreds of farmers specializing in rice and cash crops attended the meeting, eager to hear the President’s upcoming projects scheduled for implementation over the next few weeks and months. A key focal point is the construction of a significant canal, akin to the Hope Canal, which is anticipated to enhance drainage and irrigation, unlocking approximately 54,000 acres of land suitable for rice, cash crops, and livestock production.
President Ali emphasized the government’s intention to collaborate closely with farmers to establish effective land allocation and planning mechanisms. To diversify livestock farming, a direct asset transfer initiative will provide each farmer with 10 impregnated Black Belly sheep, along with support extending to swine, egg, and cash crop producers.
A special development fund will foster co-investment in high-impact agricultural projects, aiming to bolster regional output. The government plans to construct climate-smart greenhouses and hydroponic systems to empower over 3,000 local vegetable farmers.
Moreover, revitalization of the coconut industry will see the distribution of one million high-yield coconut trees, with accompanying investments in modern storage and processing facilities to stabilize prices and curb post-harvest losses. The establishment of a new wholesale market with cold storage will enhance profitability while localizing sales.
As part of a robust food security strategy, the President affirmed the administration’s commitment to supporting farmers by integrating technology into agricultural services, promoting inclusive development, and encouraging farmer input in shaping future agendas.
